MOISSANITE VS. DIAMONDS FAQ

What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a precious gemstone created from in stars. Henri Moissan, a French scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry discovered the gem in 1893. A meteorite had fallen to earth in Arizona and what he initially thought he had discovered were diamonds, turned out to be crystals that were composed of silicone carbide.

Natural moissanite is incredibly rare, so moissanite available today is laboratory-created. After many years of trial and error, the particles Moissan discovered were successfully synthesized to produce what is now one of the world’s most scintillating gemstones.

Moissanite is engineered to give the illusion of similarity to diamonds, but is compositionally and visually quite different from a real diamond. The durability, brilliance, and color of the two gems are quite distinct.

MOISSANITE VS. DIAMONDS – SHINE BRIGHTER THAN A DIAMOND

Diamonds are traditional, white gems with sparkle and fire that has made them a sought-after luxury jewelry item both for their beauty and their rarity. Forever One Moissanite is equally beautiful, as colorless (D-E-F) as the highest grade diamonds, and costs up to 85% less than comparable sized diamonds. Our exclusive manufacturing and cutting process not only allows us to offer beautiful, socially responsible jewelry at an incredible value, but also ensures the quality of your Moissanite gems.

Mohs Scale of Hardness

On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, moissanite scores a 9.25; a very good score that makes it one of the hardest substances on earth, and very suitable for everyday wear as an engagement ring. Diamonds are the hardest known mineral and receive a 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.

Brilliance Refractive Index (BRI) the measurement of a gemstones ability to slow down, bend and reflect light.

Fire Dispersion is when a light is split while passing through a gemstone, causing a rainbow-like effect.

Hardness MPOHS Scale is a qualitative scale characterizing the scratch resistance of various gemstones and minerals.

In addition, Moissanite has a greater refractive index and therefore contains more fire and brilliance – the internal play of light inside the gem – than diamonds. How is this achieved? We cut our Moissanite in a unique way that emphasizes the natural beauty and sparkle of the gemstone. Our expert gem cutters examine each individual stone and determine the cut that would yield the most beautiful Moissanite gemstone. From this, we use specialized cutting techniques specific to Moissanite to enhance each stones fire and brilliance.

Another benefit of Moissanite is that it comes in second only to diamonds on the hardness scale – surpassing other gemstones including ruby, sapphire and emeralds. Even with a slight difference in hardness, don’t think Moissanite isn’t tough. Our Forever One Moissanite is rated “excellent” in durability, which means it can withstand the demands of daily wear.

Heaven Culture Jewelry introduced Forever One, the first colorless Moissanite created gemstone, in 2017.   Forever One is the epitome of created Moissanite, and it’s helping change the way the industry thinks about environmental responsibility and the way buyers think about fine jewelry. Forever One Moissanite is lab-grown, so there is no mining involved in the creation process. It is not harmful to the earth, and it is not involved in any conflict trade. We are proud to say that our gems are eco-friendly and sustainable, and it is part of our corporate mission to continue to provide socially responsible choices in the jewelry industry at the revolutionary value.

Forever One is the culmination of two centuries of research and two decades of continuous innovation and is now available in two color grades: colorless (D-E-F) and near-colorless (G-H-I)*. The difference between the two is barely discernable with the naked eye, but we want to ensure excellence with every stone we grade. We pride ourselves on our stringent grading process. We have trained experts hand-grade each piece of Forever One Moissanite, which ensures the quality of the products our customers receive. Our grading scale guarantees our colorless D-E-F gemstones are just that, colorless. Near-colorless G-H-I is made from the same materials, however it has a slight icy blue hue when exposed to light at just the right angle.

VERSATILE AND APPEALING DESIGNS MATCHED WITH UNPARALLELED QUALITY

Moissanite jewelry is not limited to specific styles, so when considering moissanite vs. diamonds, you will still have a huge array of luxury designs to choose from. Whether you want modern designs or traditional or vintage looks, Heaven Culture Jewelry comes in all of the same cuts, settings, and configurations in which diamonds can be featured.

The difference is, of course, that distinctive moissanite brilliance, along with its eco-friendly beginnings. Each stone is carefully inspected for flaws, clarity, and brilliance to ensure that every moissanite gem is as beautiful and brilliant as the special person who will wear it.

WHY WOULD I BUY A MOISSANITE OVER A DIAMOND ?

When buying a diamond ( in most cases)  it automatically looses about 30 - 50% of cost right after it leaves the store. It really doesn't make sense why either. Think about it , it's not like a car where it's been used because a diamond doesn't scratch , change color , or get weaker. So many people believe that diamonds hold their value and prices always go up. However , the truth is you are paying for that up front and have to wait years to see if it will have the value that you paid for it when you bought it. In most cases , the answer is it won't.  Even if it does , go up in price , jewelers will use so many excuses such as well I'm only buying one stone when I normally by 10 for a discount. However, when they buy it back from you, they offer as if they are buying 200 from you. Here is a simple test , pick an EGL certified stone from any website. Call any jewelry store to see if they buy jewelry and how much they will offer you for that stone. If they tell you well I have to see it, just say I can give you all the specs,  color ,clarity ,etc. and all the information that is listed on the site for that stone. You'll be amazed at how many will try and get you into the store without giving you a firm number on the phone. This is because they are going to offer so low that once you are there they will try and buy it from you at a super low price by finding things wrong with it that aren't. Jewelers buy diamonds sight unseen all the time. They purchase based on the specs of the certificate , so why wouldn't they give you a firm answer on the phone? Sounds odd doesn't it?  Have fun with and see what happens.

With Moissanite , you are getting the look of a diamond and if not a "better looking diamond" than most diamonds for less than a quarter of a natural diamond. The Moissanites are cut to perfection and all have perfect polish, symmetry , and proportions. Thus, this creates the maximum brilliance , sparkle , and fire of a flawlessly cut diamond. Very hard too tell and will even fool a diamond tester.

WHAT IS THE PRICE DIFFERENCE OF A MOISSANITE VS DIAMOND?

Usually the average price of a Moissanite is 20 % the cost of the natural diamond depending on where it is bought.

ARE MOISSANITES MADE FROM DIAMOND?

Moissanites are made from silicone and carbide which are found in traditional diamonds. This is why thy are very close in strength, look, and durability than any other of the semi precious stones.

ARE MOISSANITES AS DURABLE AS DIAMONDS?

On the Mohs. Scale , Moissanites are 9.5 hardness while diamonds are 10.

Most semi precious stones fall below 6 on this scale.

CAN MOISSANITE BE BURNED OR BROKEN?

Exactly like diamonds , Moissanites can be burned however , only under intense torch heat and very high degrees for a long period of time. A jewelers torch working on a ring will not burn a Moissanite , nor a diamond.

CAN ONE LOOK AT A MOISSANITE AND TELL IT IS A MOISSANITE?

Most people cannot and neither can jewelers. Most jewelers need 10X magnification in order to look for clues that will only be seen by the magnifier. Still, it will not be easy to identify one has a Moissanite with the aid of a Magnifier or even if ones does have it. Many celebrities and common people alike wear Moissanite and never get asked or even have people know that they are wearing it.

WHAT QUALITIES TO MOISSANITES HAVE THAT DIAMONDS DON'T?

Moissanites are all cut to perfection. They radiate brilliance that most diamonds don't have unless they are well cut and high quality. The polish, symmetry, and ratios are all of that to a perfectly cut diamond.

CAN MOISSANITE BE DETECTED

A diamond tester will test Moissanite as a diamond. There are special instruments that must be bought to specifically test for a Moissanite. These are high priced gadgets and are only sold in very few stores in the jewelry trade.

WHY IS IT WORTH IT TO BUY A MOISSANITE OVER A DIAMOND?

Value. You are not paying the full and extended price of a diamond which in almost all cases will never be sold for the same price or even close to it , in the future. Diamonds are beautiful and do hold a brilliantly marketed value, however, it's exactly that.  A brilliantly marketed value which has crashed in the past.
